Title: Spamming
Post by: PanzerOx on August 13, 2005, 08:51:31 AM
I know people are concerned about the quality of posts that flow through these forums, and I'd like to take a moment to help you all clarify what is spam and what isn't.

Quote
spam n.

Unsolicited messagesl, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; junk e-mail.

tr.v. spammed, spam·ming, spams

To send unsolicited e-mail to.
To send (a message) indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups.

Spam by the Monty Python definition is excessive, annoying repetition of anything.

This is spam, and actual examples I've found on the forums.

Seconded.
Thirded.

or quoting a post just for emphasis.

This is not spam, again, these are real examples.

Yeah, what's with this?

Well, I have friends who are communists, republicans, democrats, and libertarians, as well as a national socialist.  But I still can't understand these extreme neo-liberal things.  I just can't.  Banning video games is like banning movies, or guns, or board games, or even rights.  I have the right to own video games, as I have a right to own music.  I have a right to bear arms.  A right to free speech.  A right to free America.

On a slightly different note..

I recently heard they banned GTA SA in Australia.  Can anyone confirm this?

I've run across ALOT of sites like these and I have to say that the internet is plagued with them. Its quite disturbing. But then again as I've learned today the quality of the internet only shows the quality of the people that use it.

Both your cards are operating at 233Mhz. Also, the amount of texture data BF2 needs to store is too much for your graphics card video ram (or the PC ram), reducing the texture resolutions should help you with the turning slow downs.

Thanks everyone for examples, and I hope you all move away from the first group and into the second group. I, as well as the other moderators, will be watching for spam posts and deleting as nessicary. I'll leave this thread open for comments.

I will be focusing on emoticon, quoting, and "Seconding/Thirding/Fourthing" replies.

Thanks Panzer for hopefully clearing this up for a lot of people. Hopefully in time, the quality flow of the forum will curve to a much better outcome because of this.

You know, that would be considered spam. We don't need people to pat us on the back and restate the obvious.

Well sorry if I appreciate the things Panzer has pointed out. I'll be sure to never properly acknowledge someone next time they do something good.

I know it is unnessicary to the topic, but he cannot provide anymore information then what is present, his post is fine.

Yeah, complimenting someone or something isn't spam.  If he had just posted a smilie or said "Finally!  At Last!" or something, then maybe that could be considered spam.  Plus he did add something, that hopefully people would recognise that posting a random YTMND link is spam.  Actually, I think a few YTMND things are funny and are worth linking to, but they would have to be earth-shatteringly creative or original or funny to deserve a topic all of their own.

Perhaps we could start an official YTMND and funny videos thread, so that I know never to click on it as to not make me angry.

And yes, thank you Panzer. I've been bitching about the spamming for a while now and I agree. Thank you for putting your foot down.

I needed real classification of spam. Thanks.

Thanks for contributing your badassness to my thread.

Can you sign my penis, good sir?

EDIT: Seriously, if you're going to say shit like that, just don't bother posting it.

You know,
after reading through the SteamPowered Forums today.

I've come to the conclusion that the HIT forum isn't too bad in regards to spamming and stupidity.
(although there has been an excess of CZ & CS:S models which is bringing in a few nubs)

But compared to this other shithouse of forum (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=55)
You boys are doing a good job of running a sensible forum.  ;)

I agree with LaggedRabit, The HIT forums are not perfect but I've noticed its about as close as you can get on the net. HIT is actually the most stable and well looked after forum I have ever seen, and its because of threads like this, when the mods re-enforce the rules and weed out the occasional "fucking idiot" that turns up.

It would be nice if there was no spam, but I can live with a little spam considering the good health and state of the forums.

This the reason this is the main reason I post mainly here.

i used to post on sites like PHL and the sven coop forums, but the spam and constant nubery pissed me off, so i left those forums.
