Guess I could help out, if you could use me. What needs to be done?

I've been working on something really awesome, and I guess I'll show you guys now. Remember those pseudo-ironsight crosshairs I made? Well...

Version 2 has been scratched. That's because I'm working on REAL actual Half-Life ironsights. I managed to do a few weapons so far... I might not do the crossbow though, because of the scope.

In my time zone it's a bit late to be saying this, but April Fool's. >>

Man, I don't think Bungie ever gives up with their projects, do they? With this game, and the Halo series they've made, they'll never let us down in gaming fun!

They're well made but I think those crosshair's are a bit of an eyesore in HL to be honest, they're too cartoony for the style the game uses if that makes sense.

It's the basic coloring that does that. I"m addressing that in my next version, which will take I have no idea how long. I kind of feel like I need a small break from the darned things for a little bit first, I worked non stop on them for several days straight for a while there.

No, he means making them more than just flat colors. They're are pretty basically colored. Add a little more depth, which is what I plan on doing on the next version of them, or at least trying to. And technically, you can only have 255 colors, you need that last color to set the transparency.

8
Sorry Meazum, DiamonD's right. We can't have our cake and eat it too in this case. It's either one color with multiple shades of transparency, or multiple colors with just on/off transparency. Otherwise, I would've done that right from the start, believe you me!

Kinda figured the pack would get mixed feelings from people, heh. I knew they were going to be sorta distracting, but on the other hand, they're just sort of fun to fool around with.

I might go back and make them more colorful, but how much so depends. I have a limited palette of about 255 colors to work, having to save 1 color for transparency..

The obstruction I'm trying to combat with more streamlined crosshairs. I think for future updates I might:

-Increase the "screen-size" of the Gauss crosshair, but keep the junk around it minimal like it has been. This may involve just recreating the whole thing.

-Make it so the Gluon crosshair is only the screen, so it's not nearly as clunky and more streamlined.

-Remove the grid from the RPG crosshair so it's easier to see targets.

-Remove unnecessary text from the reticle area of crosshairs. (I.e. lilttle detail stuff like SYS OK, etc)

When I go to make these changes, I'll just put the originals in a single .rar, and release a second pack on this page. Any other suggestions you guys might have?

I've decided that I'm going to make alternate versions of the gluon crosshair and hivehand for those who don't like the extra largeness of them. The gluon is only so large because I tried to stay faithful to the original design on the V model. Right now I'm altering the bmps, so I should have the alternates on here soon enough.

The ironsight crosshairs I've been working on in the "too much time" thread are finished! Now I recommend that these be used in resolutions 1024x768 and higher due to the size and style of some of these crosshairs. The ones that require less accurate weapons, such as the Gluon gon, may block your vision some, especially in lower resolutions.

These probably aren't best for serious deathmatching or anything, but they're fun to play with and it's certainly a fresh change of pace! Give them a try please, and let me know what you think!

EDIT: Added streamlined versions of the gluon gun and the hive hand, since those two were the largest crosshairs in the pack. Preview picture and download link of the small versions below!

UPDATE March 28: Oops, I messed up on the text file for the crossbow. The zoom didn't work right, but now it should so just redownload the pack. Also going to make an even more streamlined gluon crosshair because it's still fairly clunky, and going to update the larger hivehand with a smoother background like I did with the smaller one. Scratch that, I'm going to try to make a better 2nd version of this stuff, and release it in this thread. Don't know how long it'll take. Leave suggestions on how I can make it better without losing the ironsight-ness and cool stuff. I've already posted my ideas on how I can improve them.

IDEAS FOR THE NEXT VERSION:

-Increase the "screen-size" of the Gauss crosshair, but keep the junk around it minimal like it has been. This may involve just recreating the whole thing.

-Make it so the Gluon crosshair is only the screen, so it's not nearly as clunky and more streamlined.

-Remove the grid from the RPG crosshair so it's easier to see targets.

-Remove unnecessary text from the reticle area of crosshairs. (I.e. lilttle detail stuff like SYS OK, etc)

-Add at least some basic shading to create some depth to the crosshairs.

also, to add on, you should make those wires on the crosshair blur out when nearing the end of the side of the crosshair, just to make it seem likes it's ongoing, and not abruptly stopping.

I'd love to do that, but with this kind of sprite mode, it's either complete transparency, or none. I can't do partial.... Well.. I might be able to *sort of*, but not very well...

EDIT: No, it looks tacky. Better to have it just be "cut off". Best I can do.

EDIT: Done! Now to make the pack and release it. I've decided that this is probably a crosshair pack best meant for higher resolutions, at least 1024x768, due to the size of some crosshairs.

EDIT EDIT EDIT: I've released the pack, and included smaller versions of the two largest crosshairs in it (The gluon and hive hand). Go download it in the 2d textures/audio forum!

WIP Egon crosshair. It's almost done, just need to clean it up, color it, decide on a reticle crosshair, and add the little designs. Based off the side contraption thing to the right of the SD glowing v_egon model that has an aiming reticle on it. Picture of that uploaded for reference.

Also, Abyss, like your crosshairs! They got a neat feel to them I think.

Meazum: I'll look into making a more streamlined variation of the hivehand crosshair later after I finish the pack.

eh, well, most of my stuff is free for whatever use anyway. But I'll be a lil more careful with the rest of the previews. Almost done anyway, I just have to do the gluon gun. I finished the hive hand. It's literal art o_@; I think I got the semi-trippy effect I was going for, you guys tell me

(If you can't tell, it's from the inside view of the hive hand, looking out from where the hornets fire. :P )

EDIT: I'm gonna have to make it a different color than purple. Maybe a reddish color. The purple doesn't show up very well in broad daylight areas of Half-Life. Was hoping to use that color though, since it's "Xen-ish".

Since we're on the subject of crosshairs here, here's some more of my ironsights project for Half-Life. I improved the tau/gauss one a little bit, and here's a concept for what the RPG one will look like (It'll be the 2nd largest crosshair because the RPG isn't exactly a super accurate weapon, and the screen on the "ironsight" will give you enough area to see what you're aiming at.) The hivehand is probably going to be the largest at 256x256 for the alien vision thing, but it'll be single color transparent so it won't completely block off your sight.

EDIT: Finished the RPG, the Egon and Hivehand are the last ones that need the treatment!

EDIT EDIT: Oops, forgot some important text on the RPG crosshair. There, done!
