Conversation / Will be in military service

I'll be in military service next Thursday(11/22) until Jan 2009. Well, I won't be in any regular forces (Army/Navy/etc.) since my nearsightedness problem, but I still need to take one-month military basic training. Then I'll be transfer to a government department like the police, fire department, or local government offices for 13 months service.

In case you're curious about the conscription/mandatory military service in Taiwan: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_the_Republic_of_China
(I'll take the alternative service in the article.)

I might be able to use computers during my service, but I can't guarantee that if I can still work on models. So I guess it'll be a long time before I get back to customization communities. :P

General Chat / Half-Life default weapons timing

Last week I took a look at HL source code and made a timing list for some weapons. I guess it might be useful, informative, or curiosity-satisfying for some people and modders, so I decide to post it here (in seconds):

  • All Draw/Holster: 0.5
  • Crowbar Attack cycle: 0.5

  • 9mm Pistol Primary shoot cycle: 0.3
  • 9mm Pistol Secondary shoot cycle: 0.2
  • 9mm Pistol Reload: 1.5

  • .357 Revolver shoot cycle: 0.75
  • .357 Revolver Reload: 2.0
  • .357 Revolver Zoom pause: 0.5

  • 9mmAR Primary shoot cycle: 0.15
  • 9mmAR Secondary shoot cycle: 1.0
  • 9mmAR Reload: 1.5

  • Shotgun Primary shoot cycle: 0.75
  • Shotgun Secondary shoot cycle: 1.5
  • Shotgun Reload(insert each shell): 0.5
  • Note: The prepare action before inserting shells (start_reload) takes about 1 sec.

  • Crossbow shoot cycle: 0.75
  • Crossbow Reload: 4.5
  • Crossbow Zoom pause: 1.0

  • RPG Reload: 2.0
  • RPG Toggle LTD pause: 0.2
  • Gauss Primary shoot cycle: 0.2

P.S.: I didn't check other explosive/alien weapons, since most custom models with custom anims are for weapons listed above. I think these should be enough.
P.P.S.: Only the Draw and Reload timing are the most important, and their anims playing time should match the timing IMHO. Other anims like shooting don't need to be restricted within the timing.
P.P.P.S.: No OP4 weapons because OP4 source code doesn't get released.

Models / Skins / [WIP] OC-14 Groza

It's based on a heavily modified Darkstorn's AK47, I started this about one weeks ago when I was bored. Yep, I know I failed at modeling. The biggest problem for me is the carry handle/iron sight part, I might finish the new mag and stock parts first, then finding someone who can help me with the carry handle, iron sight, etc.
Or....Maybe I'll just give it up? (God, I hope I won't. :()

To be honest, I should release these models after I release my AK-101/102 hack for CS:S, but I'm just too busy at my schoolwork. :-[ (damn mechanism and engineering mathematics....)

Note for HL compiles:
Toadie made a throwing grenade animation for launching grenades with 9mmAR. And I speed up the fps of drawing and reloading for matching the time consistency. (0.5 sec for drawing and 1.57 sec for reloading)

Note for TS compiles:
I use AK-47's "draw" animation for M4A1 "coldcock" since AK-47 has no melee attack animation in TS 2.1. (But how can I do a melee attack with M4A1 in TS 2.1? or is it just a preparation for TS 3.0?)

look messed up in iron sight mode.

Models / Skins / [Hack] Combine Pulse Assault Rifle Mk2

One day while playing Metastasis mod, I was thinking: "hmm, HL2's pulse rifle is a good concept, but I like Combine mount gun better." So I did this quick hack job for self-entertainment.
I deleted the bipod of mount gun and put the grip, trigger, and stock of default pulse rifle on it. I also patched up missing faces, edited its UVmaps, and threw it into 3dsmax7 to resmooth it. (the first time I totally use smoothing groups for resmoothing.)

The result is like these:

2. compile for w_irifle.mdl: (I know there's clipping on NPC left hand, don't complain about that. :P)



I call it "Overwatch Standard Issue Pulse Assault Rifle Mk2", OSIPAR2 for short.
Now I need someone could help me with a new set of anims, because it doesn't suit the default anims of pulse rifle that has fancy "mechanism actions". (It should be as "boring" as MP7 when firing, and Freeman pull off the whole ammo drum and reload a new one on the gun.)

Ok, I post this topic mainly for releasing TS version, but I still added download links for HL and CZ version in case you're interested. (I think there's no one like me using an AK without grenade launcher for 9mmAR :P)

It's actually weird for using an AKS-74U as a M4A1 replacement, but I just like it. I know there're some problems about accessories and animations (read the credits.txt), but don't tell me that I should "fix" them since I think they're acceptable and I'm very busy at my school work recently (learning 3dsmax, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, etc., man, I wish I could have 48hr a day.)

BTW, no AK47 compiling request, thanks.

OK, the PBS-5 silencer is my first model, so please don't complain about
its quality :P

Accessories seem a little out of place, but it's really hard to put them
in the same position as the accessories of default M4A1.

Since there's no coldcock animation for AK, I use draw animation for
coldcock temporarily. Once TS 3.0 comes out, I'll recompile it ASAP.

Yeah, I changed my mind because I still like most of HIT people. (well, not all people :P)
I won't make any M4A1 compile unless there's a new set of animations. No M4A1 compile request, thanks. :P
Oh, and you can't see the muzzleflash in the view model.
I move it far behind the screen for making the model look more realistic when firing.

UPDATE: now with a new silencer skin made by Splinter!
