You could always try Open Office. It's apparently free and similar to Office, but the rule on "no warez" hasn't been lifted.

"Too many vertices" can sometimes be caused by broken smoothing. .3ds is a fine example of a shit format that breaks Milkshape.

In response to Kyler's idea of per-player sound types, unfortunately you can only add sounds events (or indeed any event) to monsters or weapons, as they're not enabled in the code for players. However, Sven-coop may have enabled qc events for players, I really don't know.

If I remember correctly you put the additive groups at either the top or bottom of the submodels groups in Milkshape. I think? Never done it myself.
