Black Mesa Source to GoldSource
« on: January 02, 2010, 02:03:49 PM »

I just want to ask, if Black Mesa Source is released which will be released soon, would someone port the models (or the whole mod) to Goldsource, or tell how to convert them to Goldsource (without Source SDK), and i want to ask too, do porting from a Source MOD to Goldsource is also illegal, Thanks.

Do you have the authors permission to do so?

I would port V_ and W_ of weapons from BMS but only for myself.

It's impossible without the source SDK

also once again:

No what is illegal, is to port from Source to GldSource and release it without authors permission

That's actually a kinda fun idea, the only difficulties I could see would be any physics based puzzles needing to be reworked for GoldSrc... I would just port the p_ w_ and v_s, maybe hgrunts, but that's really it.

Their new character artist is really relying on shaders to make the art pop, which is all good and fine in the Source engine but it would just look like washed out poo in the oldness of Goldsrc. Another problem is the environments, as in, Source can handle much more complex ones. You see, a long time ago there was a certain mod that tried to recreate HL2-style environments in Goldsrc and they found that all that geometry detail doesn't sit well with the old engine, and since BM is even more detailed then that it would be even harder. AFAIK scripted sequences would have to be redone as well. I guess it would be kind of neat but in the long run, impossible.

You talkin about that mod from FPSC that was recreating the alpha/beta HL2?

LOL I saw a mod trying to recreate the entirety of HL2 on GoldSrc... now that I think about it, this would be tough shit and not go too well. What was made for Source works better on Source usually imo... But you said it better Abyss. :P

*pointless stupidity*

What the.... Why the fuck would you want to port BMS to GoldSrc?!

Just buy Gmod. It's 10$ or less.

Or, hell, CSS. Or HL2 + stuff.

Yes, I know you're just asking. I'm asking why the hell anyone would -want- to bother porting BMS to Gold Source.

that's not right - goldsrc's style is: complex brushes, low/medium-res textures, no models. source on the other hand has: simple brushes, high-res textures, world models. there's a formula for every game, if you look at Remedy's Max Payne, their formula was (this was actually explained by some dev at Remedy): high-res textures on low-poly models, low-poly levels + realistic/high-res textures - it really works, doesn't it?

The problem is just that i don't have Source SDK, well because my Retail Half-Life 2 copy is a stupid counterfeit, well, that's is my problem, i could have convert it and don't have to ask this in the first place if i have source SDK.

Just buy legit hl2 for <$10... Or better yet, the orange box. Not too expensive and well worth it on the latter.
