Metro 2033
« on: March 19, 2010, 02:05:09 AM »

So a lot of you guys like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. right? You like the idea of post apocalyptic Russia? (Ok it was actually the Ukraine.. but work with me here!)

Thus, I'm kinda surprised there isn't a thread on here yet about this...

Details from wikipedia as I'm too lazy to write my own;

Quote
Metro 2033 is an upcoming action-oriented video game with a combination of survival horror, RPG, and first-person shooter elements. The game is based on the novel Metro 2033 by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. It is developed by 4A Games in Ukraine and will be released in March 2010 for the Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows

In a Nutshell, a more linear story-driven S.T.A.L.K.E.R-esque FPS with rpg elements set in the Russian metro following an unspecified nuclear war that's reduced the outside world to a radioactive ruin. In 2033, civilisation lives in the Underground tunnels, each station it's own city and beyond those walls... mutants.. and much much worse...

I pre-ordered it because it looked awesome and came with Red Faction: Guerilla for free. I haven't gotten around to playing it though.

Me too... seems I get a free drinks mat... cool!

After returning to the world of Steam for the first time in 5 years...

...seems to be ok so far... game wouldn't start to begin with but I restarted Steam and it was fine.

First of all the graphics in this game are.... astonishing... some of the best ever in a game for sure.

Playing on high @ 1280x1024, bit of slowdown in areas with lots of people around but mostly a solid 70-50fps in combat areas so far.

Here's a couple of screenshots;

Unfortunately you can't disable or enable advanced graphics effects which is annoying as Hell...

Damn.. the fucking bloom shit slows some scenes down to 20fps... ffs.

I was going to play in Russian but some of the background audio doesn't have subtitles so you'll miss some ambience... so for first playthrough I'm using English voices, which are kind poor really. I tested the Russian voices and they are fantastic... shame not everything is subtitled.. but the sentences of some characters loop so it gets repetitive so it's probably not a massive deal.

First person cutscenes are well done... really don't know why there are thirdperson scenes... doesn't really work too well in narrative.

Children in a videogame... omg!

More shots, even something simple like a sink has oodles of detail in it.

Yet another game dev using cgtextures :P

Character model detail is insane.

Objectives clipboard is a cool idea and works well.

I can see me falling in love with this game very quickly...

I was pretty worried, when I first glanced on the optimal system requirements... but this game runs sooo smooth on my nearly 4 year old setup, where only the graphics (HD4850) are peaking out.

Dunno 'bout the graphics, I'm sticking to ATI, but everything else should be fine.
Desktop, Intel E6600 2.4 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and a HD4850 - the game runs pretty smooth with native resolution, DX10 with "high" details/effects.

I run it fine on an 8800GT, so graphics-wise you're good.

finished it, ******SPOILERS AHEAD********

Good Lord this game was hard as nails at times... getting close to an enemy is not easy since they seem to be able to spot you from miles away... in the dark. Stealth is pointless in this game, I managed to knife two guys before another spotted the bodies... and then me... those GT AI videos are rubbish... the game is nothing like this.. it's made of rock covered cement!

I fucking hated the Librarians.. they're so bugged, sometimes you can get past ok and other times you do what you're supposed to and they still beat 7 bells of shit out of you... and the Snotballs weren't much better... who honestly thought it would be a good idea to include those?!

I didn't have any problem with running out of ammo like some people did, there's shitloads of it hidden in little nooks and crannies everywhere, the game rewards players who explore that's for sure.

I got the war ending, was actually kinda sad at them wiping The Dark Ones out, they hadn't really done any damage and the PSI instances were just their way of trying to reach out to the human race.

Great game, atmosphere like no other...

Here states it's coming out May 21th. There are German and Swedish versions if you can read either.
