Just make sure you don't skimp on any specific part though.

1 weak or otherwise problematic piece of hardware could result in annoying problems later on.

My computer, for example, can't reboot or boot properly if it had only recently been turned off, unless I reset the CMOS every time.

Oh, and the 7900GS? You could play Oblivion easily if you so wanted to.

Also remember that, unlike what most people seem to think: Amount of RAM memory after about 1GB does not matter for most users.

Speed and timings of ram however, do matter.

My 2 cents.

A Decent set of parts anyhow, Min Rizor. Good luck with your build.

Does that apply to OS performance, application handling and games? Or is it just games?

Just performance in general.

If you are doing a lot of compiling / rendering or multitasking, and I mean a lot, then it may be worth it. Also 64 bit systems are rumored to need more, but I am yet to find this true.

I think Copperheads, and not the Diamondback are 100% symmetrical? Doesnt it have those rubberlines along both left and right sides, and two sets of minibuttons?

You are correct, however the minibuttons are fairly useless as there not very convenient to press.

I plan on going with somewhat out-of-date hardware as I'm still bloody poor. But it will be basically as such (provided that NewEgg doesn't stop selling the stuff I'm planning on):

- Motherboard: ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 ATX AMD
- Processor: AMD Athlon64 3200+ Venice 2.0GHz (Socket 939)
- RAM: Corsair ValueSelect 1GB Dual Channel Kit (184pin DDR400/PC3200)
- Video Card: LeadTek PX7900GS 256MB GDDR3 PCI-E 16x
- Case: Rosewill R5601-BK ATX midtower

Nice selections.  The only advice I would offer is to try and go with a PCI-E board and card rather then an AGP.  Despite all the bandwidth improvements, it will make your system much more upgradable when you do have more money.  I might suggest the Asus A8N-VM 939 mobo and a 7900GT instead.  The GT is barely more money the the GS, and if it still proves too expensive then you can drop down to the 7800GT and still be saving yourself in the long run.  If you decide in six months you can't play the games you like with the card you have, then then you will have to buy a new mobo and a new card; with a PCI_E board you'll just need the card.  This will be even more amplified when Vista and DX10 are released.  There will be NO DX10 AGP cards.  After Crysis is released you may be kicking yourself, lol.

Just something to consider.

I'll agree with that, as you said... in most cases.  However when I jumped from 1 gig to 2 gigs (timings were also faster) I noticed a substantial difference in games like BF2 and FakeFactory's mod.  Also when editing movie footage and yes, compiling.  Still, 1 gig will perform very well.

I think the performance increase in BF2 would have been 99% because of the tightened timings. Can you set the speed and timings to the same as your other set and do a little test for us on BF2 please ? I'm V interested now.

Infact, could you try with a 6% lower memory speed and loosen each of the timings by 1 on the 2GB set for me and test that on BF2. Just a little something for my laptop seems as I'm limited to what memory I can fit in it.

Cheers.

DECREASE MY PERFORMANCE!?!  ARE YOU MAAAD!?!

;D

I'll give it a try when I get time, right now I'm a bit swamped.  My team mates are having to take up the slack for me, so helping them out will take precedence I'm afraid.  Still, I'm curious myself.  When I get the time I'll do some tests.

Alright cheers mate.

Hmm, just re-read my post and thought I should clarify the test:

1#:
1x 1GB @ 377Mhz, 2-2-2-5

2#:
1x 1GB @ 400Mhz, 3-3-3-6

3#:
2x 1GB @ 377Mhz, 2-2-2-5

4#:
2x 1GB @ 400Mhz, 3-3-3-6

Yes, I know dual channel mode will also be a factor, but that is partly the point of the test. ;)

Ehm... the A8N-E IS a PCI-E board (no SLI capability, but still...). :\

Ah... my mistake.  When I saw the "GS" tag at the end of the graphics card I assumed it was an AGP card.  That is the tag nVidia uses for the AGP versions of their 7X00 series.  Leadtek is messing mith my brain!

Sorry about the confusion.

Nah, GS is another edition of the chipset. The 'newer' 6800GS's which replaced the 6800GT's were mainly PCI-E.

I'm tempted to run dualies but don't know.

One problem is, getting it to work.
Two is, I don't have room.  :(

I miss the CRT's I had because these have the "ghosting" in games, but after a few days of gaming on them, you really don't notice it.
I had to remove my computer desks CD holder to get the right monitor one, the left is blocking my cuboard (which I only threw excess cabels in anyways).
As for getting it to work, get a program called UltraMon it does everything for you basically with nice additions (separate taskbar for every monitor instead of all programs appearing only on the primary monitors taskbar)

This is the layout of my monitors:
