Half-life 2: Episode 2 crash (MY GOD!) SPOILERS AHEAD
« on: November 23, 2007, 05:18:31 PM »

I've finally played through to White Forest, but as soon as the doors open, I hear someone greeting me and then the game crashed  :o
I've reloaded several times, and aas far as I can tell it is nothing to do with the speed of my computer (everything is recommended on 'High' in the video settings). However, when I played through from the beginning to see if it was something to do with my saved games, I got to the point where you first see Magnusson of the screen, and after Kleiner says 'Did you hear that Magnusson?' (before he even walks into view) the game crashed again.
I'm think it must be the model, although I don't know if you see him at the beginning of 'Our Mutual Fiend'.
If anyone can help, PLEASE DO! This has really dented the amazing gameplay I was experiencing.  :'(

It does sound like the model is causing the crash... I used to have this problem with high poly models on my old PIII
Try lowering the model detail, that ought to let you get by.

Just out of interest, what are your FPS?

I have lowered the model detail to medium, but I'll put it onto low.
I'm getting an average of 23 fps. Nice and smooth to me, but a bit sluggish at major effects, like the portal storms. But onlt slightly.
I just want to play it!

:| I would consider anything under 50 FPS sluggish!  I would definitely consider lowering your settings all around with that in mind.  Another thing you could try is moving your PC to a cold area... it can help it regulate temperatures when highend games drive temperatures through the roof

I said 23fps average. I do hit nearly 70 fps sometimes, but as I said, big action sequences slow it down.
My PC can cope with the graphics on high, and it is also at a good temperature.
I've also set all the video options , including resolution,to their lowest settings but to no avail. I wasn't expecting it to work anyway, as it was the very beginning of Chapter 6 that things started to go wrong.
There are a few people with this problem ,and they all seem to be relying on the next Steam update to fix it.
Thanks anyway SaxonSwine, and any more suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Ouch, 23fps.

Anyway try verifying the integrity of the game cache file.
In the Steam Games view, right click on EP2 and go to Properties, then click the Local Files tab and select Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

Also are you meeting ALL of the min specs ? Closing all background programs before playing ?

Hope that helps.

I've found the source of the low fps. My sound card - it didn't seem to like more than 20 sounds going through it at a time. (why?). Now getting an average of 63 fps.
I've been on Facepunch, and it seems that a lot of people are having this problem with Episode 2 so it looks like I'll have to wait for the next Steam update   :(

Just to check, are you using the English version ?

Are you using any odd hardware, odd setups, beta or non-mainstream drivers ?

I'm using the English version.
Nothing else is wrong, hardware or otherwise. I've played Portal and TF2 today with no problems at all, high settings with no lag.
