Post joo car!
« on: May 05, 2008, 05:00:35 PM »

I don't post here much but I figure this is worth a post and maybe get some useful feedback.

A week ago I bought a used Chevy Lumina '97. Excellent condition with only 70,000 miles on it. Under body is rusted but I'm not worried about it.

Anyway, I plan to do some upgrading to it. First project is my stereo. Right now it has a factory installed stereo with cassette player and AM/FM radio plus factory installed 6x9" rear speakers and 5 1/4". Very blah for me being that I like to play my own music and have it LOUD.

So what I need feedback on is for a stereo and speakers.

Specs:
In dash stereo - 5 11/16" depth
Rear speakers - 6 x 9"
Front speakers - 5 1/4"

I've been looking around crutchfield's site where I was able to put what kind of car I have and have it narrow down my search to the stereo and speakers that will fit my car. This helps but now I need to know what some of them sound like. Today I plant o go to a local detail shop and see what they have stereos and speakers wise that are within my spec range for the car.

Anyone have suggestions while I do some searching on my end?

Shoulda gotten a Monte Carlo. Essentially a Lumina, but a 2 door.

:P

We own a '99 Monte Carlo.. pretty good car, but the doors are damned heavy. :S

Looks pretty nice.

*has nothing useful to really add*

The dealer I got it from didn't have one. Monte Carlo are nice though, but I would end up spending a lot more than I planned to. Lumina cost me $3600 which was fine for the condition, year and mileage on it.

Can't argue with that logic.

Yeah, the dumb ass wouldn't get out of the way.

Anyway, I got a stereo today. It's Sony that cost about $120.

Got it installed at a local detail shop along with a few other stuff like antenna and dash kit. I also got some other stuff for my car today so I'll get pics when I get the shit in.

Next up will be new speakers which I'll probably get next payday and have a guy from work install it for me. $35 an hour to have my local detail shop install it is crazy. Even $35 bucks to have that guy take 45 minutes to install my stereo was nuts. I spent enough on the stereo and extras alone.

Well I was going to say:

For the head unit, get an Alpine. They are the best make currently.

For speakers, I'd advise you try the stock ones.

In my Focus, I use an Alpine head unit with the stock speakers and it's great. I don't think changing the speakers would make much of a difference, in all honesty.

In my previous car, I had a 12" sub. I now use that sub for my PC Gaming as it doesn't make enough of a difference to warrent loosing the boot space.

TBH, the stock ones suck. I was listening to the same Sony head unit I have installed with some Pioneer and Alphine speakers at the shop and I was blown away. I like to have some bass to my music and the stock speakers don't cut it for me.

Pic of new stereo in my car.

That audio cord going from the stereo is hook up to my Ipod which is not visible in the pic.

You crazy Americans and you're strange looking pseudo-sedans. If I have learned anything from the small amount of my slightly more car-learned freinds, it's there's only 2 good cars IMO -

- '90 Nissan 180 SX. Fine-tuned asian performance car, with an engine that technically outputs above it's class, AND it has all sorts of strange Japanese gizmos (like the "you're going over 110km/h" bell and the windscreen-projected HUD)

- Opel Kadett A. Tribute to Soviet engineering. Can YOUR car cross Namibia without having to strip off ANYTHING? I didn't think so. Tough as nails, runs solid in all conditions. My kind of car. Just needs a new radio and speakers and I'd be set.

OT: not too bad. Can't really complain, my first car was a Nissan wagon that was worn to shits. Never bothered with the radio though, didn't have the money or the time to bother with it :P But yeah, go Alpine if you can splash for that stuff.
