Random Sci-Fi... Lab... Thing...
« on: July 17, 2008, 09:21:45 PM »

So I needed some mapping practice and started making this. Unsure where I'm going with it at the moment, but it'll eventually be something, even if just a HLDM map.

Edit: The rooms still lack about 50% of the detail I'll be adding. Especially the first room.

Nice textures and architecture, get some prop models into it, and some crates.
Rumpel bored the mapping? Yeah, thats very slow process if u wanna make good quality maps  ;D.

Looks good, bi, but I think the sign on the "Experimental laboratories" sign should either be entirely in capitals or both words begin with capital letters. It looks more professional that way.

Yeah, it's not my texture. It's just from some wads that came with Reissues.

Which reminds me I haven't looked through these wads yet. I'm sure I can find something interesting in Second Wind.

Minweeeeee, that'd be an -amazing- hldm map. There aren't many dark maps I know of, and knowing your skittles, this will be amazing. The pics look promising!

Are there gonna be any secret rooms?

The lighting is amazingly hot.

I think lighting is good, but... How could anybody work here? Think about it, if you trying to make realistic lab. Just add some switched off light sources.

Thanks for all the comments, guys! DiamonD, I think I'm going to make it an episodic space-based map-pack, releasing more if people like it. There might be secret rooms, but if I told you then they wouldn't be secret anymore. =P

There is one, although it's hard to see. To the left of the pillar on the right nearest to the player in the 2nd picture, you can see the main floodlight/striplight (which is off, of course). I've attached a small picture so you can see it easier:

The reason it's so dark is because it's an abandoned spaceship on auxilary power, about to self-destruct.

PS: Here's what it would look like if the main light was on:

Looks very nice. I agree with the above, add some props and maybe some cover. The light looks really nice and doesn't have this Half Life style... which is very overused.

Last shot (the one with new light) is my favorite so far. Do you use radlights?

Well, quite nice that you bothered to add this. Not many mappers really thinks about that smalll, but really important (at least for me) details.

Maybe add some details on the columns? By details I mean some connection between column and floor/ceiling.

Radlights? Never heard of that term. All the lights in the map are texlights, based on my custom lights.rad file.
