Need some advice on making terrain
« on: August 30, 2008, 10:56:27 PM »

I'm a fairly competant mapper, there's little I can't do except when it comes to making decent terrain. I can make basic landscapes but nothing too complex as I tend to end up with invalid brushes if I try to be too ambitious with the vertex manipulation tool. I was thinking of trying Nemesis's Terrain generator but I'm not sure how good that is, perhaps some of you have used it before? Now I'm happy with the look I'm going for, my next task is to design the landscape surrounding the lakeview point and the closed tunnel.

A way that a lot of mappers tend to do it is to divide a box into lots of smaller boxes, then manipulate the vertices and edges of the smaller boxes.

I don't like land generators or similar software. I always do my job manually with triangles.

Don't try making terrain with boxes.  You need to make it with triangle shapes...  I'll send you an example file later.  Terrain gen is OK, but it is usually easier to do stuff yourself.

SaxonSwine, you could also post the file here... I'm sure a lot of other people have problems with terrain (like me).

OK this is 5 minutes work... basically if you look at the Hammer picture, you'll see that this simple hillside is made out of triangles.  You morph the triangles to get the shape you want, and you won't get any invalid brushes!

I've included 2 files in the RAR file, one is the example terrain which I've just created, the other is a set of flat triangles which anyone is free to use for creating terrain =)

I might write up some proper mapping tutorials some time and see if they can go up on Half Life Creations :)

Well I get it a bit more now but I still keep getting invalid brushes. Anyway, this is what I've come with in a short space of time.

I don't think they are supposed to be flat.. the compilers don't like that :P, but I could be wrong
