Unable to open recent files in My Documents
« on: September 09, 2008, 05:14:03 PM »

Recently I for some reason lost permission to use my files in My Documents and its folders on my computer. I managed to fix it for files that I'd made before the problem, but I can't open, move or edit any new files in there. Any solution suggestions?

Have you tried copying the contents on the folder to another location? Try making another user account as well, it might be that your current one is corrupt in some way.

Might be a desktop hijacking malware or something, because I can't open my Display Properties when I had a malware in my PC. I can't see the Log Off, Local Discs C: and D: too.

SmitFraudFix fixed the problem.

I tried SmitFraudFix, but it unfortunately didn't seem to work. I've made a new account. How would I go about transferring the documents from the old, corrupt account to my new one?

You're probably better off posting on the Microsoft forums.

Recently I for some reason lost permission to use my files in My Documents and its folders on my computer.

Just thought I'd add my two cents to this 2 week old thread,
since nobody these days remembers theres the default windows admin account for problems like this.

If your using Windows XP Home:
reboot into Safe Mode (press F8 before the splash screen)
Now you'll notice theres a second account to choose from called "Administrator " on your log-in screen .. choose that one instead of your user account.
(theres no password by default unless you've already assigned it one).

Now you'll be able to change file/folder permissions on anything.

If your using Vista:
MS has made it a bit more tricky to use the default admin account... try this
1. open a command prompt in administrator mode by right-clicking and choosing "Run as administrator".
2. type net user administrator /active:yes
3. You'll now get a message saying the command completed successfully.
Log out, and you'll now get the Administrator account as a choice on your log-in screen. (there's no password by default as well)

Now you'll be able to change file/folder permissions on anything

... Or do some really serious damage  ;)
